How a Vaccine Could Help Protect Kids from 6 Cancers
The HPV vaccine is recommended for all preteens and is safe and effective
A vaccine that can prevent six types of cancer is recommended for all preteens and young adults, but only about half of them get it.
That's a shame, because the HPV vaccine is very effective at preventing these cancers and it's also safe.
The HPV vaccine protects against six types of cancer:
- Cervical cancer
- Vaginal cancer
- Vulvar cancer
- Anal cancer
- Penile cancer
- Oropharyngeal cancer (cancer of the back of the throat)
HPV is a common virus that can be spread through sexual contact. Most people who get HPV never have any symptoms, but some people develop health problems, including cancer.
The HPV vaccine is given in two or three doses, depending on the age of the person getting vaccinated. The vaccine is very effective at preventing HPV infection and the cancers that it can cause.
In fact, a study published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine found that the HPV vaccine was 97% effective at preventing cervical cancer in women who were vaccinated before they were exposed to HPV.
The HPV vaccine is safe. The most common side effects are pain, redness, and swelling at the injection site. These side effects usually go away within a few days.
If you are a preteen or young adult, talk to your doctor about getting the HPV vaccine. It's the best way to protect yourself from six types of cancer.
