Matthias Platzeck was born on May 26, 1953, in Potsdam, Brandenburg, Germany. He studied human medicine at the Humboldt University of Berlin and obtained his doctorate in medicine in 1980.

Political Career

Platzeck began his political career in 1990, when he joined the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD). He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the SPD's state chairman in Brandenburg in 1995. In 1999, he was elected Minister-President of Brandenburg, a position he held until 2013.

During his tenure as Minister-President, Platzeck oversaw significant economic and social changes in Brandenburg. He focused on promoting renewable energy, infrastructure development, and education.

Controversies

Platzeck's tenure as Minister-President was not without controversy. In 2002, he was accused of plagiarism in his doctoral thesis. The accusations were eventually dismissed, but they damaged his reputation.

Post-Ministerial Career

After stepping down as Minister-President in 2013, Platzeck served as the President of the Bundesrat, the upper house of the German parliament, until 2016. He retired from politics in 2019.
